Yellowtooth: Crushed by the Wheels of Progress

Heavy, heavy, heavy. That is as good a word as any used to describe Crushed by the Wheels of Progress, the sophomore album from Indiana's Yellowtooth. The band formed in 2008 and have been unleashing their massively heavy riffs ever since.

The band is Peter (bass, vocals), Henry (guitar, vocals) and Ed (percussion, backing vocals).

Without the use of keyboards I did find the band's sound somewhat one dimensional as each song is built upon some of the heaviest riffs I have heard all year. Nothing wrong with that though as some of the chord progressions and guitar solos are pretty cool, like the ripping guitar in "Climbing the Mountain" and the slow burning riffs in the album opening "Meet Mr. Mossberg", a song that starts heavy and never lets go. What I did have a problem with are the shouting death growl lead vocals as they did get a little tiresome at times. On "Season's End" the band does add clean vocals into the mix which was certainly a welcome reprieve. On the title track the beginning riffs are slower but just as intense with a more Black Sabbath feel. After that all hell breaks loose as the band amps up the tempo until slower riffs return at song's end.

The band doesn't let their foot off the gas throughout the course of the disc so if you like heavy music you have come to the right place. If you like more brutal vocal forms that should seal the deal. Released on Orchestrated Misery Recordings.
