Trio 96: Quartet '99

Sweet Mother of God! This disc is absolutely electrifying! Trio 96 (which records as either a duo or a quartet. Don't ask me why ) lay the pedal to the metal and just explode from the starting line, leaving nothing but smoke and burned rubber in their wake. Quartet 99 is just that: the band expanded as a quartet and recorded in 1999. Where these tapes were lying for 5 years is a mystery, but thank goodness the folks at Poseidon released them. 5 tracks of mayhem which combine elements of Zappa's more freak out style, with elements which remind this reviewer of Mahavishnu Orchestra. The quartet is made up of mainstays Ishikawa Kenji (guitar) and Tanaka Yasuhiro (drums) . Joining them to round out the quartet are Eriji Hiromitu (bass) and Yano Tomoaki ( tenor sax) . The tracks are semi-improvised jam sessions loosely thrown together in a maelstrom of notes. This is a no-holds-barred assault where all 4 members just let loose. Note-frenetic lead guitar is counter-punched by virtuoso sax wailings, while drum fills abound , and the bass is left to try and fill as many voids as possible. Fans of 70s jazz rock will get their fill here, despite the disc's short length. Whereas some bands get accused of adding filler to lengthen their discs, Trio 96 serve up 30 minutes of blistering music which will leave the listener out of breath, yet grinning foolishly. One of the best I've heard in 2004. Highly recommended.
