Sabbath Assembly: Sabbath Assembly

After the folky yet highly creepy Quaternity from 2014, New York City cult act Sabbath Assembly return with a decidedly 'metal' release for Svart Records, very simply titled Sabbath Assembly. Honestly, we always knew the band had some doom up their sleeves somewhere (with that name...come on), and they deliver in spades all throughout this latest album. Comprised of Jamie Myers on vocals, David Christian on drums, Kevin Hufnagel on guitar, and new bassist Johnny DeBlase, the band churn out 9 heavy tracks here chock full of massive riffing, crashing rhythms, and Jamie's haunting vocal delivery."Risen From Below", "Burn Me, I Thirst for Fire", and "Ave Satanas" hit quite hard, fueled by Hufnagel's crunchy riffs, but it's the more psychedelic moments, heard on "Only You" and "The Fiery Angel of Desire", that really show off a different side to the band, as Myers floats her ethereal vocals around dense yet trippy & heavy musical passages, almost like a head on collision between Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Black Sabbath, and Danzig. "Sharp Edge of the Earth" revisits some of the folk flavors of the previous album, but with a nice headbanging finale, while the dreamy closer "Shadows of Emptiness" features lush acoustic guitars and alluring vocals for a soothing trip down occult folk avenue.

Honestly, I could listen to stuff like this all day, and if you gravitate towards doomy metal with plenty of folk & occult leanings, topped off with soaring female vocals, this album will be well worth investigating.
