Odegaard, Dave: Second Attention

If only every instrumental rock guitar album was this good. Guitarist Dave Odegaard, who hails from Los Angeles, CA, has created a catchy, groove- filled masterpiece here on Second Attention, a collection of songs that would cause Joe Satriani or Jeff Beck to kick themselves, lamenting the fact that they themselves didn't write and record them.

Odegaard has plenty of chops, yet he displays them so tastefully on these ten tracksch helps the album become anything but a shred fest. Songs like "Anamaly" and "Extreme" are techno-prog burners, very much in the tradition of Satriani and Beck's more recent releases, although Odegaard has a knack for creating melodies that are instantly memorable and hard to ignore. His fusion of bouncy techno beats, bubbling keyboards, and whammy bar excursions really work well together on the mystical "Endless Journey", while he goes for a more hard rocking, Eric Johnson-like approach on the addicting title track.

Some of the most dirty guitar tones can be heard on the raunchy rocker "Hallucinations", where Odegaard displays a meaty sound that would make Ronnie Montrose blush with envy. The guitarist combines speed, finesse, and effects perfectly on the rambling space rock of "Spectral Dimensions", the albums stellar closer.

Catchy melodic hooks, mighty chops, and danceable rhythms...when was the last time you heard of an instrumental guitar CD having all these attributes? Not in a long time is right. Pick up a copy of Dave Odegaard's Second Attention, and find yourself hitting the replay button repeatedly just as I did. Highly recommended!
