Murder of My Sweet, The: Beth Out of Hell

In the three years since their debut album Bye, Bye, Lullaby, The Murder of My Sweet's line-up has solidified into original members Daniel Flores (drums, keys and production,) vocalist Angelica Rylin, new bassist Patrik Janson who replaces Teddy Westlund and guitarist Christopher Vetter. The band are pleased with the results, "It took us three years to record this album and the reason for that is that we wanted to give the fans an album they truly deserve," according to Flores Daniel Flores. "We made a conscious effort to keep all the songs very interesting and diverse, much like in a film or a musical." It is true to say that Beth Out of Hell is a step up from the debut album yet my reservations about Bye, Bye, Lullabyare probably namely, as I wrote in 2013, "it is just a tad too long at thirteen tracks and it kind of sags around the middle of the record."

"Euthanasia" and "Poets By Default" would have got my vote to be removed from the final track listing as well but the nine minute plus "Requiem for a Ghost" is splendid and is the standout song. The early section of the album is terrific and Ms Rylin sings with great clarity throughout and manages to avoid the vocal tics and clichés so often prevalent in female-fronted symphonic, sorry cinematic music. If bombast, over-the-top arrangements allied to songs which weave their magic over time float your metaphorical boat then you may well be interested in this one.
