UDO: Navy Metal Night (CD/DVD)

I can picture the scene at AFM's office:

Record Company type: "Udo, baby… what have you got for us? Some new material? Some top quality metal from an artist of your stature?"

Udo: "Well actually, I was thinking about a live album as I haven't released one for about five minutes…"

Record Company type: "Indeed, you've been live in both Sofia and Moscow recently. Could we flog this particular dead horse any further?"

Udo:" I was thinking we could record with the German Navy Orchestra (Marinemusikkorps Nordsee,) package it as a double DVD/CD and rake some more coinage in…"

Record Company type: Udo, baby…I love the way you're thinking!"

Yep, it's pretty easy to be cynical about live releases from heritage acts. Whilst I appreciate that U.D.O actually makes new and good albums on a fairly regular basis this is a third live album in quick succession and with the best will in the world, it's too many although they absolutely must make sound economic sense. In other words, this is pretty critic proof. It's also very enjoyable to be absolutely fair especially since the album focuses on some deep cuts from within Herr Dirkschneider's illustrious career. You won't find "I'm A Rebel" or other Accept stalwarts here but you will find a lovely duets with Doro on "Dancing With An Angel" and a tremendous brass heavy version of "Heart of Gold" and "Trainride to Russia" has to be heard to be believed. "Cut Me Out" sounds a bit like an outtake from Swing Week in the X-Factor but other than that this is an interesting curio.
