Michael Gibbs and the NDR Big Band: In My View
Born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1937 Michael Gibbs has had a remarkable career without ever having become anywhere near a household name. In a career spanning more than half a century, he's collaborated with a dazzling array of artists in jazz and beyond, including Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Joni Mitchell, John Scofield, Gary Burton, Whitney Houston, Peter Gabriel, and Richard Galliano.
In My View was recorded over a three year period in collaboration with Germany's NDR Bigband with whom Gibbs has worked on and off since the early 1970s. The album is well worth wallowing in, set some time aside and let yourself drift away with the smooth, luxurious sounds of Gibbs and his cohorts. Wallow in the intricate arrangements but above all feel the quality of a jazz master craftsman. If your toes don't tap on "Spanish Sketch" then I imagine you've probably already been cremated. It's good to have such high class music released for the public's enjoyment.
