Various Artists: A Light in the Black (A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio)
Some reviews kind of write themselves and this is probably one. Here goes; "this is an album that doesn't need to exist like a new Styx/U.D.O/ Deep Purple/ Foreigner live album. Ronnie James Dio's back catalogue is so strong that everything he ever did is pretty much definitive so new versions of his output just don't need to happen." Thanks for that, now, what's next in my review queue?
It's easy to be snarky about the whole enterprise (and I must admit I very much was before actually listening to the album) but at least most of the acts do justice to the material and the opening three tracks on CD 1 are particularly good whilst Burden of Grief give "Neon Nights" a new impetus and punchy sound in a Death metal style which is at least somewhat different. The Order's "I Could have Been a Dreamer" is pretty lumpen but oddly endearing and I enjoyed listening to this record but in essence it is a bit of a novelty to listen to a couple of times before returning to the original versions.
