Whorion: The Reign of the 7th Sector

Whorion plays symphonic technical death metal with precision and intensity. Some of our readers may have heard this band's 2014 EP Fall of Atlas. This album, the band's first full-length release, is somewhat bigger, and more epic, in scope. This band is obviously very talented and very ambitious and its members have worked hard to develop its sound. I was especially fond of this album's closing tracks, "Gates of Time," "Immaculate," and "Arrival of Coloss," especially the latter. Though not much different than the earlier tracks in terms of the songwriting, these last three songs feel like they achieved a much better balance between the symphonic elements and the technical death metal passages. "Gates of Time," of course, is a symphonic instrumental, so there's no problem there. The last two tracks, though, do a better job of highlighting the band's proficiency on their instruments while also using the symphonic parts to round out the overall sound. Earlier tracks, though no less intense, do not achieve as good a balance, making it sound almost though the various components are in competition with each other. Granted, symphonic technical death metal assumes that the ears will be working extra hard to pick up all the various parts; still, getting the balance right is not easy. I'd definitely recommend that interested listeners check out the last part of this album to get a sense of this band at its very best. "Arrival of Coloss" is especially recommended.
