Here we have the self-titled debut on Cruz Del Sur Music from Chilean/Belgian doom metal act King Heavy, who are comprised of current & former members of Hooded Priest, Mourner's Laments, Noctus and Procession. Hints of Candlemass, Cathedral, and Danzig can be heard throughout King Heavy, but the band seem to be trying hard to bring their own element to the doom style, which needs to be commended. Vocalist Luce fluctuates between a soaring, operatic style, a more gruff & gothic deep mid range, and the occasional, almost spoken word monologue, which works to great effect keeping these seven songs interesting alongside some tasty riffing. Matias lays down the heavy guitar lumber, delivering massive riffing on tracks "La Gargola", "Life AD", and the mind blowing "As the Dawn Broke on the Day", a track with many twists & turns that will delight any doom fan. "Thirteen Chosen Ones" rampages along at a faster pace, as does the sledgehammer track "Wounds", but the real treat is the epic closer "He Who Spoke in Tongues", an 11-minute journey into frightening doom, chock full of plenty of monstrous guitar dirges for those who cannot get enough of the 'riff'.
King Heavy have put together a very enjoyable slice of doom here on their full-length debut, and it will be interesting to watch their career from here as they attempt to rise through the ranks of the metal heavyweights who have come before them.
