Rusty Pacemaker: Ruins

Rusty Hessel aka Rusty Pacemaker is a multi-instrumentalist hailing from Lanzenkirchen, Austria. Rusty formed the project in 2003 and released his debut album Blackness and White Light in 2010. This leads us to his second album Ruins, released this year. Pacemaker plays all instruments except drums which were supplied by Franz Löchinger.

The music is very much guitar dominated and Pacemaker adds plenty of doomy riffs and atmospheric chords to make this a fairly interesting metal album. The heavy riff laden "Made of Lies", the more atmospheric metal/post rock of the album opening title track and the doomy "The Game" are all quite addictive. The one drawback is Pacemaker's lead vocals. His thick Austrian accent and sometimes slightly off key lines maybe off putting for some but I quite like his laid back approach which works well within his metal framework. The somber ballad "Night Angel" is another slow moving piece featuring Pacemaker's monochromatic vocals, gentle keyboards and augmented with Lady K's much more melodic vocal delivery. "Candlemess" is another doomy metal track as is the album ending "Pillow of Silence" with its heavy dose of melancholy.

If you can get past the vocals (they will certainly be an acquired taste), fans of melancholic metal will probably dig Ruins. For those interested, samples can be found on Rusty's website. See the link below for further information.
