Gary Peacock Trio: Now This

Gary Peacock's career has spanned over five decades and the bass player extraordinaire has played and recorded with the likes of Ralph Towner, Keith Jarrett, Marilyn Crispell, Paul Bley and many more. His most recent album as a band leader titled Now This demonstrates just how good a musician he is as his playing on the double bass is both vibrant and forceful. That said, the rest of the trio, Marc Copland (piano) and Joey Baron (drums), both serious jazz musicians in their own right, are given the space needed to shine on their respective instruments. Copland's piano, sometimes sporadic, sometimes fluid lines weave amongst Baron's subtle drum work and Peacock's fluid bass.

The overall tone of the songs is sometimes wistful, as in the album opening "Gaia", a complex modern jazz offering with moments of slight dissonance and lovely melody or quite unsettling with the mysterious "Shadows" being a prime example. The pace of the album as a whole is quite slow and the songs certainly take their time to evolve.

Another excellent track is "This", where Baron's deft cymbal tapping, Copland's sometimes melodic piano lines and Peacock's complicated bass runs makes for a slow but immensely satisfying listen.

As with most ECM releases the production by Manfred Eicher is exquisitely executed and the album sounds great on a good set of headphones.

Now This is a slightly eclectic modern jazz album created by three veteran musicians whose wealth of experience is conveyed on every note. Highly recommended!
