Death Karma: The History of Death and Burial Rituals, Part I

The title of this album may bring to mind a history book more than a black metal album. I would certainly be interested in both. With this ambitious project, the band explores the ways different peoples and cultures approach death and burial. The result is as fascinating as it is powerful. I will assume that the liner notes explain some of the practices a little bit. I have short descriptions in the band's promo materials and find them really helpful. More importantly, though, they make me want to learn more about the different ways people approach the universal problem of death.

As the track listing shows, Death Karma focuses on six countries for this album. Like the rich and fascinating cultures they explore, each song is different in significant ways. Though I can't say for sure, I think the band draws on scale patterns and chords to reflect the musical traditions of each country being highlighted. I hope so; otherwise, this whole album would have missed some superb opportunities for musical growth. I've already described this album as fascinating, but that's one of the best words for it. Each time I listen to it, I find myself rapt by the layers of sound and the ideas of death and burial that lie behind them. At times, I can even hear something of mystery and wonder people bring to this subject. It's hard to bury our loved ones, but rituals of various kinds help make it easier. This album captures both the sorrow and the hope of letting go—and of holding on.

I won't say that this album redefines black metal or anything like that. Nevertheless, it certainly demonstrates just how much life, how much possibility, may be found with a little creativity and ambition. I look forward to the next installments in this project. For those interested in hearing this new release, I'd suggest starting with "India" or "China" and then working backwards.
