Titan's Eve: Chasing the Devil

As I write this, I can picture this band making its way across Canada, playing to metalheads in places like Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. Hailing from Vancouver, this band has risen to impressive heights in the metal scene not only in their native Canada, but also in parts of the United States and Europe. It's clear to me that these guys have a bright future, one in which this new album (the band's third) will play a significant role.

For the most part, Titan's Eve creates music that is as eclectic as it is energetic. Though the band is probably best described as a blend of thrash and doom metal, there are so many influences in play here that it's actually pretty hard to pin things down with exactness. This is not a bad thing. I mean, the band claims at least some connection to bands like Overkill, Arch Enemy, Machine Head, Evile, and Mastodon as influences. To my mind, the music here cannot be reduced to any one of those acts; instead, the music simply finds a home within the strengths of all these bands, staking a claim only to the musical style we all love. I love thrash metal and these guys play with all the requisite speed and energy.

The music on this album is consistently strong and impressive. Tracks like "We Defy" and "Warpath" are convincing contemporary metal anthems. I was also fond of the title track, "Chasing the Devil" and "The Grind," a track that, fortunately, had nothing to do with grindcore. Instead, it's a song about that other grind, the one that most of us call our daily lives. I recommend this album to listeners who want to hear a successful blend of melody, thrash, and doom.
