UK prog metal/djent darlings TesseracT are only two studio albums into their career, and here they are with their first live CD/DVD set for Century Media Records, titled Odyssey/Scala. Odyssey is listed as the title of the CD, recorded live during concerts all around in Europe and Russia on the Altered State World Tour in 2014, while the DVD portion Scala was filmed live on November 6th, 2014 at a sold-out show at the Scala in London, England. So, instead of the normal CD/DVD combo of the same show that we normally see, this is a real bang for your buck live collection here. Original vocalist Daniel Tompkins is also now back in the band, so Odyssey/Scala is also a celebration of his return as the band get set to finish up studio album number three.
Many of the bands beloved tracks are included here, like the dramatic "Deception - Concealing Fate Part Two", the atmospheric progressive death/djent metal attack of "The Impossible - Concealing Fate Part Three", the soaring "Perfection/Epiphany - Concealing Fate Parts Four/Five", as well as some of the bands more atmospheric, melodic songs such as "Proxy", "April", and "Resist", all of which bear a strong resemblance to modern day Anathema with some prog-metal tendencies thrown in for good measure. The bands penchant for spacey soundscapes mixed with powerful vocals and crunchy, off-kilter riffing is on display during a great rendition of "Nocturne", and one of the more complex and heavy tracks here is the stunning finale "Acceptance - Concealing Fate Part One".
While we weren't supplied with the video portion of this live set to comment, the audio tracks are all dazzling and surely the filmed concert from London will be equally as sensational. If you want a snapshot of a great young band still yet at the peak of their powers, make sure to indulge yourself in this one.
