First of all, as an elephant lover, I'm all over this awesome cover art to the latest from My Sleeping Karma, titled Moksha. This is now the fifth release from this German psychedelic space/post rock outfit, and album that drifts, meanders, soars, and plods along through 11 tracks of instrumental soundscapes. Not quite metal, not quite progressive rock, but somewhere in between, Moksha features six 'songs' that are surrounded by shorter interludes, the main pieces all well thought out slow builders that rely more on atmosphere and tension than bombast or complexity. Lilting guitar chords, shimmering keyboards, and meditative drumming permeate the chilling "Vayu", while "Akasha" sees heavier guitar riffs come into play and more of a hard rock based formula. However, it's the near 10-minute title track that is the most successful piece here, as gorgeous piano melodies give way to thunderous riffs & rhythms, searing guitar solos, and an eventual return to majestic, tranquil waters.
There's a lot to like here on Moksha, but I'm left wondering how much better this album could have been were the short interludes given more life and fleshed out a bit. The full blown tracks however are quite strong, making this an album that I can easily recommend to fans of psychedelic rock, prog, or atmospheric metal.
