Chisholm, Hayden: Breve

New Zealand born saxophonist Hayden Chisholm, now residing in Germany, has been teaching, playing and composing in the European jazz scene for over a decade. His new album is titled Breve, which is also name of his trio consisting of Hayden Chisholm (alto saxophone), John Taylor (piano) and Matt Penman (bass).

Completely different than the Tim Berne disc I just reviewed, Chisholm prefers a lighter touch as he weaves his alto sax through nine classic/romantic style jazz tunes at a slow and relaxing pace. Although the playing isn't furious, the players have a deft of touch that is both absorbing and highly listenable. Although this is a very mellow album, listen to the album opening "Patche" and "Barely A Moon", both having a serene and romantic touch, Chisholm does get a little spry on the lightly swinging "Tinkerbell Swing" . Although mellow, the album is inundated with classy solos. Just listen to the breathtaking bass playing on the breezy "Augmented Waltz" to get a taste of some fantastic musicianship.

The album ends with the lovely ballad "Fly" and its gorgeous piano led melody.

Hayden Chisholm's Breve is a melodic jazz album with a subtle touch and a gentle heart, yet with the outstanding musicianship the best jazz always seems to muster. I really like it.
