Crommie, Daniel: Other Elements

The latest CD from Daniel Crommie, a multi-instrumentalist specializing in electronic soundscapes is titled Other Elements, and according to the press release is influenced by the ambient work of Fripp/Eno and Jon Hassell.

This is not so much a collection of songs as it is sound collages of the ambient electronic variety. It is rather hard differentiating separate tracks so the album needs to be taken in as a whole. Sometimes quite minimalistic in design, this is not an easy set to digest as the melodies are quite fleeting. Crommie uses mandolins, buche, balalaika, recorders, flutes and synthesizers to create music that certainly stretches the boundaries of compositional form. I also hear influences of Jean Michel Jarre, particularly in the first track "Ether Oro", whereas other tracks are a little more unsettling like the darker toned "Deep Cave Antlers" and "Aluminum Flyer".

I am still not quite sure what to make of this disc. While it certainly is not something I would listen to every day, when in the mood for more ambient/experimental leanings, Other Elements will probably make a decent headphone album. Released on New Weave Records.
