Mnemic: Mechanical Spin Phenomena

Mnemic is/was a melodic death metal band from Denmark. Their debut disc Mechanical Spin Phenomena was originally released in 2003 on Nuclear Blast and has since been reissued by Metal Mind Productions.

Mechanical Spin Phenomena is an interesting metal album featuring odd metered riffage, as intense as it gets, dynamic vocals, both clean and harsh and thunderous drumming. Since there are no guitar solos to be found, the band's tight rhythmic display is essential to their sound, which is clearly influenced by bands like Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad and Fear Factory. The band also uses keyboards which helps to soften is the overall heaviness, creating different atmospheres when the need arises.

Songs like "Liquid" and "Blood Stained" are mind numbingly heavy with tight tempo and time changes while "DB'XX'D" combines Meshuggah-like riffage with a steady helping of keyboards and a cool atmospheric ending.

One of the best tracks is the spacey "Zero Gravity" driven by slow moving metallic riffs, floating keys and blasts of synthesizer. Another highlight is the title track having the most melodic chorus on the disc. The vocals remind me of Devin Townsend.

Mnemic offer a little more than your average technical metal band, incorporating industrial sounds and atmospheric sections to ensure the listening experience never gets boring. If you have not checked out this band before Mechanical Spin Phenomena would be a good place to start.
