Evil Invaders: Pulses of Pleasure

Earlier this week, I reviewed Armored Saint's latest album. Listening to that terrific album put me in a nostalgic mood. I discovered heavy metal in the early 1980s and have been hooked ever since. Though I've certainly grown up, part of me will always be the kid listening to 80s metal through the headphones on my Walkman.

I mention all that because Evil Invaders plays explicitly to that nostalgia for the 80s. From start to finish, this album sounds exactly like the kind of stuff that would have been released back then. I'm not talking about hair metal or glam metal. This is faster and heavier, music inspired by bands like Exodus, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest. Listeners will especially enjoy the Exodus-style vocals. Joe, the band's singer, shrieks and shouts with the high pitches of a Rob Halford or the power of a Bruce Dickinson. Some listeners may feel like this vocal style is mostly a parody of old-school metal. Perhaps it is, but it makes for a fun listen.

The other highlight of the music comes from the guitars. The solos are especially exciting. As we used to say, these guys shred! There are even some triumphant-sounding twin-guitar harmonies, played to perfection. Speaking of guitar, be sure to check out the chops on display on "Blinded." This band certainly saved the best for last.

Even though this album plays to the old-school, it's not just a fun diversion. It's also a strong new release, just the thing to wile away the hot summer months.
