Brooklyn based label RVNG Intl's third installment in their archival series turns to Seattle based artist Kerry Leimer. Canadian born, American based, Kerry was at the forefront of the underground Seattle electronic ambient music in the early 70's and continues to release music through his own Palace Of Lights label. Long time readers of SoT might remember that Kerry was also a contributor to the site in the early 00's.
Think of A Period Of Review as a snapshot in time that offers the listener a small peak into his vast collection of archived recordings. Covering material that has gone largely unheard until now, Leimer dusted off the old tape reels and offered up thirty selections, that in the end often come across perhaps as edited or shorter versions of what could be longer pieces of music. A good portion of the compositions here are in the 1-3 minute range, which is why they have a feeling of being a snippet of a larger whole. In the end though it doesn't matter, as there are plenty of wonderfully layered electronic tapestries, minimalist sounding beats and percussive elements scattered throughout the course of this disc to make it a satisfying and rewarding overall listening experience.
Kudos go out to RVNG for not only being the catalyst behind this archive release, but for also doing a fantastic job with the overall packaging as well. Housed in an elegant, yet simply designed slip case, the accompanying booklet contains some great vintage black and white photos, along with an informative essay that helps contextualize the recorded work contained within.
