Oxley, Pete – Nicolas Meier: Chasing Tales

First and foremost, this is a guitar album. With instruments like guitar synths, steel and acoustic 12 string guitars, glissentar guitar and fretless guitar, that should come as no surprise. After all, Swiss borne Nicolas Meier and English borne Pete Oxley are both masters of their craft, and that is playing guitar.

The duo's first album was Travels to the West, recorded live in 2012. Chasing Tales is their second and first studio recording and they take full advantage of their surroundings utilizing the studio to produce a well-balanced recording of exceptional sound quality.

From the gentle but slightly melancholic "Tales", to the relaxing and breezy "Looking West" to the upbeat "The Followers", with its crystal clean solos of acoustic and electric guitar, the playing throughout Chasing Tales is fabulous. On the uplifting "The Bridge" Pete breaks out his guitar synth adding a warm tone that meshes nicely with Nicolas's Eastern tinged glissentar guitar.

More highlights include "Breezin On" featuring some great licks, particularly the imaginative fretless solo from Nicolas and the Middle Eastern influenced "Uzun Ince Bir Yoldayim" featuring the baglama, a long necked lute instrument originating from the Eastern Mediterranean.

If you like guitar led jazz or a little jazz in your guitar, you cannot go wrong with Chasing Tales. Both melodic and complex, these two players are a perfect complement to the other, as each feeds off the other creating a truly inspirational piece of music.
