Greenrose Faire: Feed the Flames

Greenrose Faire is a Finnish folk rock band consisting of Salla Rimmi (vocals), Hanna Heinonen (violin), Niilo Sirola (Irish bouzouki, bass, backing vocals), Petri Hannuksela (keyboards), Jari Tiittanen (bass, backing vocals), Jukka-Pekka Hirsimäki (octave mandolin, mandolin) and Tomi Hyttinen (drums, backing vocals). Feed the Flames is their third release.

If you enjoy Celtic flavoured folk rock you will want to give Feed the Flames a listen. Rousing tempos with a flamboyant flair are mixed with slower ballads giving the album a nice balance. Often the speed changes within the songs themselves going from soft instrumentation to more urgent playing. You might have noticed there is no guitar listed but fear not, the Irish bouzouki and mandolin do an admirable job taking their place offering up some nice picking and strums throughout the disc.

"Too Hot to Stop" begins the disc with darker strains of violin and serene lead vocals before the tempo steadily increases to a full out rollicking tune with the fiddle ripping up the soundscape. In "Freedom" the band's chops cannot be denied as the melody is interrupted, allowing for the fiddle and organ to take center stage with some dazzling solos. "Long Time Ago" is a pretty ballad with a wistful backdrop of gentle bouzouki and lush melancholic violin while "Running Away From My Dreams" is more energetic with a driving rhythm and melodic lead and backing vocals. One of the most feel good songs is the irresistible "Together We're Strong" where one can't help singing along with its uplifting chorus.

Listening to Feed the Flames one can imagine a simpler time when there were Minstrels in the woods and fairies underfoot. If you want a bit of Renaissance in your folk music this album should do the trick.
