French psychedelic stoner rock trio Glowsun are set to unleash their third studio effort for Napalm Records, and it's called Beyond the Wall of Time, a collection of 7 semi-lengthy instrumental tracks. Mixing some heavy grooves, thunderous riffing, and trippy wah-wah drenched guitar solos, the band provide for a spacey soundtrack for the next time you dim the lights, crack open a cold one, and spark up your favorite recreational materials. "Arrow of Time" busts out of the gate with over 9-minutes of blazing, psych inflected solos, and big, fat riffing. "Last Watchmaker's Grave" equals the length, but goes a more atmospheric route before huge Black Sabbath inspired riffs and more fuzzed out wah-wah leads permeate the mix, and the rumbling grooves of "Behind the Moon" are sure to latch on to your soul and refuse to let go. "Flower of Mist" provides pure doom/stoner riffing, and the bluesy hard rock of "Shadow of Dreams" reminds of some of the great bands of the '70s. By this time, as enjoyable as the album is, you start to miss vocals and begin to ponder how these songs might have sounded had the band decided to mix in some vocal segments on some of these tunes. By "Against the Clock" things start to meander a bit, and again, could the addition of vocal sections helped out matters?
Beyond the Wall of Time is indeed a very solid album, but you have to wonder if Glowsun have kind of gone as far as they can with their instrumental vision of the band, and if they might be better served going forward adding a vocalist to their psychedelic doom & stoner brew.
