Kings Destroy: Kings Destroy

This band is named after a graffiti gang that worked in parts of the Bronx in the late 70s / early 80s. It's a cool name, one that people in New York will certainly recognize. I also want to mention that graffiti is not only one of the four elements of hip hop, but has also become recognized as an art form rather than just some kind of street pollution to be removed. Some graffiti art is even preserved in museums; some artists are likewise celebrated for their innovative approach to the medium. Aside from graffiti art and hip hop, the Bronx was also home to musicians who worked on developing new ways of blending hardcore, heavy metal, and hard rock.

As I understand it, the members of this band actually met back in the 1980s, those days of seminal musical innovation and collaboration. Some of the guys have even been in bands that some of our readers may already know—Killing Time, Uppercut, The Begotten, Electric Frankenstein, and others. Here's the full roster: Carl Porcaro and Chris Skowronski (guitars); Steve Murphy (vocals); Rob Sefcik (drums); and Aaron Bumpus (bass).

Overall, the band plays a nice mixture of stoner rock and doom metal, one that often sounds like a blend of Black Sabbath, Yob, Sleep, Queens of the Stone Age, Helmet, Kylesa, and others. As I listened, I was also reminded of ASG, a band that I admire for their heavy riffs and strong use of melody.

The best track on the album is easily the first track "Smokey Robinson." It has the best riff and is also the most memorable song. I was also fond of "Mythomania" and "Mr. O." I was also really impressed with "Time for War," probably the heaviest, most crushing, tracks on the album.

Track Listing:
1. Smokey Robinson
2. Mr. O
3. W2
4. Mythomania
5. Embers
6. Green Diamonds
7. Time for War
