Benighted: Brutalive the Sick (CD / DVD)
This release is meant to mark the 15th anniversary of Benighted's assault on our senses. Normally, a statement like that might seem insulting, but in the case of this band, it can only be a compliment. You see, Benighted creates music that combines technical death metal with deathgrind and has no intention of doing anything other than attacking audiences with its insane drumming, crazy guitars, and vocals that can only come from a monster's mouth. Put another way, the music is intense, intricate, pounding, and pummeling. Anything less would not suit this band or its fans.
I write this review at a disadvantage. I do not have access to the content of the DVD and so I can't comment on that. I have also never seen Benighted in concert, but I have seen bands like them. What I can say is that the live recording sounds amazing. There is so much going on here musically that it's nice to know that things are put together so that everything, especially with the drums, sounds as clear and as brutal as possible. Benighted is one of the most intense bands I've ever heard and it's frankly amazing that they can perform these songs so well over the course of an hour.
So far, I've been praising this recording and I think it deserves it. As a live sampling of what this band does, this is an impressive release. Nevertheless, I do not consider myself a fan of Benighted. I did not like their last album—I criticized it as noise—and I also found many of the sound effects irritating. I haven't changed my mind about that album, but I did think that Benighted's overall set here was impressive. I have no idea if things have been overdubbed much (or at all) but this band certainly takes its music and reproduces it effectively. No, the band will not appeal to all listeners, especially those who like their music to break from the relentless pounding of this performance. I like extreme metal, but I found listening to this album in one sitting to be exhausting. The musicianship is often very impressive, but Benighted comes across like the cowboys at the end of Sam Peckinpah's infamous Western, The Wild Bunch. Remember that movie? At the end, several people take turns on a machine gun and simply shoot and shoot and shoot. Most people die, including the shooters. My point is that this is relentless and intense music, the kind many people will either love or hate. My guess is that fans of the band have already picked this release up and are enjoying it. Others may want to check out a few studio albums before diving in to the band in a live setting.
