Lotta Lené's debut album Smoke and Mirrors, which is described by the artist as, " an AOR rock album with melodic songs, strong guitars and vocals. We've created our own sound using elements from hard rock, southern rock and even country." Lotta has been working with guitarist/producer Jake Mäkelä since 2006 and together they have done a bang up job of making a melodic rock album with a contemporary twist.
It took a few listens for me to really appreciate the worth of this, Lotta Lené's first venture into original material especially as the album takes until track 4 "Skin" to really catch fire – not that there's anything wrong with the opening songs but "Skin" is just excellent. It has a modern rock take on the modern rock genre and some standout guitar work. It's also a tad darker than other songs on the album which have a Roxette-style sunshine about them, not that there's anything wrong with that. Indeed, "Promises" which is up next marries shimmering guitars alongside shiny happy music to make a heady cocktail.
This may be Lotta Lené's debut album but I am certain there will be many more and I for one will be investigating in the future.
