We could very well have the doom release of 2015 here folks...that's right, straight out of the ashes of The Oath comes Lucifer, the new band led by vocalist Johanna Sadonis and completed by bassist Dino Gollnick & drummer Andrew Prestidge. With help from Garry Jennings (ex-Cathedral/Death Penalty) as co-songwriter and studio guitarist, Lucifer have created here a debut album that mixes vintage Black Sabbath/Pentagram/Candlemass/Cathedral styled doom with '70s hard rock and mysterious occult rock for a formula that stimulates and excites at every turn.
If you loved the debut from The Oath in 2014, you no doubt are already aware of the supreme vocal skills of Sadonis, and she's right at home here on these epic, doom laden gems put together by this new outfit. The riffs from Jennings throughout are to die for, laying waste to the landscape on tracks like "Purple Pyramid", "Sabbath" and especially the massive 1-2 punch that is "Morning Star" and "Total Eclipse", each one a doom classic in the making. "White Mountain" reminds a bit of The Gathering back when Anneke van Giersbergen first joined that band, and "A Grave For Each One of Us", tosses in some mystical, almost psychedelic prog flavors ala Blue Oyster Cult amid the Sabbath styled thunder. Throughout it all, Sadonis' vocals just soar to the heavens, proving she's quite adept at the more tranquil passages as well as a full on metal assault.
Lucifer have made a tremendous debut statement here, and the rest of the doom world had better take notice. This is an easy early contender for best heavy metal release of 2015!
