Dogmatic Absolution: Poetries of Oppression

Dogmatic Absolution are El (Guitar), Azazel (Bass), and Algeroth (Vocals), a black metal trio from Italy who are now releasing their new digital only album Poetries of Oppression on Tridoid Records. This is pretty raw & primal stuff, the vocals of Algeroth (cool name) seemingly spewing up from a crack in the gates of hell amid jackhammer blasting (not sure who is playing drums here) and effective tremolo picked guitar riffs. After the spooky & atmospheric opener "Ventus Mortis", the band launches into the raging "Bringer of Light", a haunting, classic sounding black metal piece. With "The Eternity Promise", it's pretty clear that brooding, atmospheric, vintage styled black metal is what Dogmatic Absolution does best, and they do a fine job of mixing in some truly lovely melodies, especially from guitarist El, in between all the brutality. The title track is a bit more pummeling, Algeroth's hellish rasps darting in between some insistent riffing, and "Almighty Solitude" takes on more of a doom vibe with heavier riffing and tortured vocal wailings. At nearly 12-minutes long, the epic "Night Arises" closes the show, a dark, menacing slice of maniacal, atmospheric black metal, Algeroth giving a haunting, nightmarish performance as the music around him fluctuates between tranquil, calming passages to out and out fury.

There's absolutely nothing fancy happening here on Poetries of Oppression, just old school styled black metal that delivers the goods. With the right amount of melody and atmosphere, plus some deliciously tortured sounding vocals from Algeroth, this is an easy release to recommend for any black metal fan.
