Bormann, Michael: Closer

I once had a discussion with our esteemed publisher about the fact that I had seen UK melodic rock heroes TeN in a tiny venue. He was surprised at the niche nature of TeN's audience and thought they would be playing fairly large venues. I had a similar reaction when, in the press notes for Closer, it appears that Michael Bormann has recently appeared on the German version of reality tv horror show The Voice. I was surprised that somebody whose work I have often admired would have to do such a thingy in order to get noticed – my word, Bormann has made some excellent albums over the course of his lengthy career.

Sadly, Closer doesn't rank very highly on the Bormannometer and disappointingly there are some real clunkers on the album especially "Down to the Bottle" which seems to think that nu metal was an acceptable form of music and needed cleaning up for the masses. Quite why the world needs another version of Demi Lovato's "Warrior" is entirely questionable and the kiddie choir on the outro of "Because we are the World" is cheesier than a lorry full of Brie. Clearly metal doesn't put food on Michael Bormann's table but this lurch towards the mainstream is desperately disappointing.
