Greek act Satan's Wrath are back with their latest mash up of black metal & thrash, titled Die Evil, for Metal Blade Records. Though there's not an ounce of originality here, it's not hard to enjoy much of what's on display throughout Die Evil. Fans of Mayhem, Venom, early Slayer, Possessed, and some of the German thrash acts like Kreator & Destruction, will certainly like the gravelly, effects laden vocals and the manic arrangements of songs such as "Satanic War", "Diabolical Shudder", "Coffinlust", and the raging title track. It's all pretty pummeling and decidedly 'old school' , though there's a certain silliness about "Raised on Sabbaths" and "A Mindless Servant of Satan" that I'm having a hard time getting past. Still, "Dead of the Shallow Graves" kicks major ass thanks to some blistering drum work and killer riffs, and truth be told, musically this album is very solid, but the hellish vocals are so over the top at times it can be distracting.
Ultimately, Die Evil can be a lot of fun if you don't take it too seriously. I find the vocals grating and laughable in spots, but can certainly appreciate the furious nature of most of these songs, all of which provide for many headbanging moments.
