Dwell: Vermin and Ashes

This is a solid debut album Dwell, a doom-death band that successfully blends the melodic, the gloomy, and the ambient to create a moody and brooding atmosphere without getting overly mired in negativity. I especially liked the sparing but interesting use of synthesizers to add additional layers of interest to the music. My favorite track on this album is "Plunging into Ash Tombs," mostly because of the slightly melodic guitar passages that flow in and out, from time to time. Little melodic moments like that help this band stand apart from others like them because it adds a little extra flavor to the already-familiar gestures of extreme noise, brutality, and aggression. There are also tracks like "Become the Void" that develop a more minimal, even ambient, soundscape that sets forth a basic melody surrounded by equally simple, but heavily sustained, chords. It sounds like the soundtrack to a movie about being lost on Mars. The track "Pathless and Dormant" does similar things, but not quite in the same way. On the heavier side of things, the band offers strong tracks like "Vermin in my Arteries" and "A Collapse Sublime." Ultimately, this is an impressive debut from a band well worth discovering.

2. Pathless and Dormant
3. Vermin in My Arteries
