Wolfpakk: Rise of the Animal

One criticism which can't be levelled at Wolfpakk is a lack of star wattage; just have a gander at the cast list who appear alongside the main members of the pack, namely Mark Sweeney (ex-Crystal Ball) and Michael Voss (Michael Schenker, Casanova, Mad Max.)

Vocals: Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic), Andi Deris (Helloween), Ted Poley (Danger Danger), Joe Lynn Turner (ex-Rainbow/Deep Purple), Rick Altzi (Masterplan), David Reece (ex-Accept), Charlie Huhn (Foghat/, ex-Gary Moore), Don Dokken (Dokken), Marc Storace (Krokus), Michaela Schober, Jean-Marc Viller (Callaway)

Bass: Bob Daisley (ex-Black Sabbath/Gary Moore/Rainbow/Ozzy), Al Barrow (Magnum), Barend Courbois (Blind Guardian).

Guitar: Jeff Watson (ex-Night Ranger), Ryan Roxie (Alice Cooper), Bernie Torme (ex-Gillan/Ozzy Osbourne), John Norum (Europe), Doug Aldrich (ex-Whitesnake/Dio/Foreigner), Axel Rudi Pell, Martin Rauber.

Drums: Mike Terrana (Tarja Turunen), Mark Schulman (Billy Idol, Foreigner), Simon Philips (ex-Toto), Chris Slade (AC/DC), Gereon Homann.

It would be fairly difficult to get some much talent together and make a turkey and whatever animal is rising it isn't of the traditional Thanksgiving/ Christmas bird variety. This is an album of solid metal (often of the power variety) which hangs together despite the noticeable difference in vocalists throughout. Lyrically the envelope is most certainly not pushed as can be spotted by the opening verse which is sung by Andy Deris:

"Red dawn, my heart is on fire
Red dawn, my eyes open wide
I´m out for blood to stay alive
My strength, is taking me higher
My strength, is all my pride
A pale rider to survive"

That said, there is much to enjoy with singalong choruses all the way through and the cheeky use of bagpipes by Skiltron's Pablo Allen on "Highlands" is decidedly chucklesome and fitting for the song. A solid, if not mind-blowing album.

Wolfpakk: Rise of the Animal
Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2015-05-04 09:09:13
My Score:

Rise of the Animal is a pretty fun all-star melodic power metal collaboration spearheaded by Michael Voss & Mark Sweeney. They duo have assembled a fine cast of musicians & vocalists, all of whom make fine contributions to this adventurous concept album. Sweeney & Voss of course are the driving force behind this project, and their vocals form the meat & potatoes in which all the other guests play off of. Helloween fans excited by the thought of Andy Deris and former vocalist Michael Kiske singing together might be disappointed, as they both appear on separate songs, but both are at the top of their game here. Toss in some sizzling guitar solos from Bernie Torme, John Norum, Jeff Watson, Doug Aldrich, and Mr Voss himself, and you have an enjoyable melodic metal album that delivers on all fronts.
