Carcass: Surgical Remission/Surplus Steel

Having returned in triumph in 2013 with the mighty Surgical Steel, Carcass went on to offer up an EP's worth of Surgical Remission/Surplus Steel at the tail end of last year. The word surplus might be a worry, but in true Carcass style, even their throwaway moments deemed unfit for a full album are worth attention. And so it proves here and while none of the five tracks presented feel as though they deserved a place on their parent full lengther, they (almost) all earn their moment in the sun.

What is apparent throughout is a singularity in pace, "Intensive Battery Brooding" introducing a little up and at 'em spirit. However if it's blast beats of death you desire, then you'll struggle to find them here. "Zochrot" is happy at a healthy crawl, vocals spat out as staccato bursts of guitar scythe through confidently, while "A Wraith In The Apparatus" snarls and snaps like a rabid dog of hades. Things nearly come unstuck on "Livestock Marketplace", which comes across as all a bit mainstream for a band like Carcass; almost as though they're trying to sanitise their sound. It isn't bad, but neither is it the finest moment this band have put together. The short "1985 (Reprise)" closes proceedings in atmospheric, almost chest beating manner and while this isn't quite a release to proclaim from the rooftops, it still finds a band capable of leaving tracks on the cutting room floor that most would be cock-a-hoop to call their own.
