Bitter Roots, The: Chiaroscuro

Here is another one I have dusted off the shelf.

The Bitter Roots is a Seattle based rock band consisting of Jeff Stetson (lead vocals, guitar, bass), Ben Koostra (drums, bass, keyboards) and Don Allen (bass). They formed in 2008 and Chiaroscuro is their third release. The band plays catchy rock/pop music with the emphasis on hooks and melody rather than dazzling displays of instrumental fireworks. Although this album didn't knock my socks off it is a fun listen nonetheless.

The album begins with the rocking one two punch of "For King and Country" and "Christmas Song". This is not complicated stuff but it is well played rock music with good riffs and strong lead vocals. "More Pretty" shows the band's punkier side while the pop rock of "Huguette Butte America" is a bit more interesting with spry organ adding an element of quirkiness. The short "Limen" has a rockabilly vibe whereas the band's folky roots shine on the acoustically flavoured "From the Beginning" and "Gilded Cage".

One of the catchiest tunes is the REM influenced "Family Ties", an edgy pop rock nugget built upon solid guitar riffs and excellent vocals.

The Bitter Roots put out a solid album with Chiaroscuro. Although fairly radio friendly there is enough variety amongst the tunes to make this one a little more interesting than your standard modern rock and pop fare.
