Back in the 80's there was a US heavy/power metal group who went by the name of Ruthless. Ruthless had started out in 1982 and two releases followed, an EP Metal Without Mercy in 1984 and then two years later they recorded their first full-length Discipline of Steel. Ruthless then ceased activities and it would be some time before they eventually reformed performing in 2009. Although so many years have passed Ruthless are still classic metal fans. On their new album They Rise the band's style is firmly entrenched in the past, with a spirited approach Ruthless resurrect their old school metal.
Not all the tracks on They Rise are their latest work as Ruthless have included those five from that earlier EP mentioned above. With gripping classic metal tracks like "Gates Of Hell" and "Metal Without Mercy" this was a welcome move and not to mention the comparison it presents to their new material, as Ruthless sound like they have picked up just where they left off. Ruthless dive right into They Rise with "Defender" a classic sounding hard driving metal track, the band backs off as "Laceration" gets going and when the twin guitar riffs do fire up Ruthless promptly have you hooked. That prominent bass on title track "They Rise", "Circle Of Trust" and elsewhere for that matter is a welcome inclusion. Ruthless put in a lively performance for "Frustration" a straightforward and captivating heavy number. There's nothing too fancy or refreshing here for that matter, but hey I wasn't expecting anything else on an album of this kind. Ruthless are yet another band playing their classic metal the way they like it, and you may very well like They Rise also, I know I do.
