Blind Idiot God: Before Ever After

Before Ever After is the first studio release from New York instrumental act Blind Idiot God in over 20 years, with guitarist Andy Hawkins co-producing with the legendary Bill Laswell. Recorded over a span of a few years with drummer Tim Wyskida (Khanate) and bassist Gabe Katz (who has since been replaced in the band by Will Dahl), Before Ever After contains a wealth of styles, from doomy post rock, to noisy hardcore, jazz, sludge, and even some upbeat reggae. At over 70 minutes worth of music, there's a lot to take in and digest here, but it's all so diverse that it makes the process easy on the ears. "Earthmovers" is pure sonic heaviness, while the engaging "Ramshackle" bridges the gap between jazz and country rock. When the band really rips it up, as they do on "Under the Weight", the results are quite massive, with Hawkins' guitar dirges really rumbling the richter scale. "Fub" even dabbles in some late '50s/early '60 surf rock, just in case you thought there was a place these guys would be afraid to go. All in all, this is a fun listen, and while it might be a little all over the place stylistically for some, in the end that's part of its charm. Welcome back guys!
