Here we have the latest release from the fine folks over at Audio Fidelity, a limited edition SACD/CD version of the million selling The Best of the Guess Who, a superb collection of hits from the legendary Canadian rock group. Mastered dual channel SACD from all the original master tapes by Steve Hoffman at Stephen Marsh Mastering, this set also includes a miniature version of the original psychedelic posted contained in the 1971 vinyl album release, which is a cool addition.
Of course all the mega hits are here, and they sound SPECTACULAR, even in regular old CD mode, crisp, clear, bright, and punchy, and it's one memorable track after another, "These Eyes", "Laughing", "Undon", and the harder rockers "American Woman" and "No Time". Sleepers in this batch include "Share the Land" and the engaging "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", but in truth it's an enjoyable collection top to bottom, with even the lesser known, Who flavored "Hand Me Down World" and Beatles influenced "Bus Rider" providing for some spirited rock 'n' roll fun. Of course, as history states, lead guitarist and songwriter Randy Bachman would leave the band just as they were skyrocketing to superstar status (and eventually forming BTO...the heavy "Hang On to Your Life" here seems a precursor to that band) while the rest of the band eventually disbanding a few years later, with reunions happening periodically until just a few years ago. It's probably a safe bet to say that these songs have never sounded better, so if you have a SACD player, this is a no brainer, and even standard CD folks who are looking to upgrade their old CD copy, this is well worth investigating.
