Brett Netson & Snakes: Scavenger Cult

Known for his work in Built To Spill, Caustic Resin, and recently with Earth, Scavenger Cult is a three song EP from Brett Netson featuring drummer Steve Gere, and stereo bass contributions from Ian Waters and Josh Gallaway. Netson himself provides Neil Young style guitar throughout. My initial thoughts upon listening to the EP were that I'd gone back to the 1970s and Netson himself notes that, "Scavenger Cult was made specifically for the decent '70s tuners and turntables that you can still occasionally find at yard sales, pawn shops and thrift stores." So far so good and Scavenger Cult is definitely a grower and pleasingly uncommercial. All three songs groove along in a suitably stoner/sludge-based fashion with the eleven minute psychedelic "Sharpening Knives" being a particular highlight that bodes well for a full length album.
