K-X-P: III Part 1

In a massive shock, K-X-P hail from Finland and are not a metal band! I shall repeat that, K-X-P hail from Finland and are not a metal band! However, they (or to be precise, their own imprint Öm) reside on the wonderfully eclectic Svart Records so there's a very decent chance that their efforts will be worthwhile and indeed they are. The trio: Timo Kaukolampi (electronics, vocals and the 'K'), Tuomo Puranen (bass, keyboards and the 'P'), and alternating drummers (the 'X' – for the mystery apparently) clearly love to improvise in the studio both musically and personnel-wise, "We are not a traditional band in that sense, there is like ten rotating members in the studio and live" says Kaukolampi."

This may well explain why the wall of sound on III Part 1 nearly shook my wooden floors into pieces and this despite a total lack of guitars on the record. Much of the new album was made in Suomenlinna, a World Heritage fortified island in front of Helsinki with producer Ilari Larjosto who at times has enabled the band to get a vibe and sound much like early Human League albums. There's more than a faint whiff of Tangerine Dream on an album that just begs to be listened to as a whole with no distractions from the outside world.
