Santa Cruz: Santa Cruz

Other than post-grunge I struggle to think of two more frightening words in the English language than modern rock and those words are in the opening sentence of Santa Cruz's press release. Certainly Santa Cruz have a solid grasp of gratuitous swearing especially the oedipal compound noun which may or may not be strictly necessary but they do have a set of more than decent tunes and in Archie Kuosmanen and Johnny Parkkonen a pair of guitarists who gel extremely well together.

According to their press kit this album, "further distances the band from the throwback glam metal sound, as they mix their influence of the 80's and early 90's hard rock sound with elements of modern rock and metal and put it in their own special blender, ice the mix with blinding energy, stupefying stage show and a healthy dash of bad attitude!" Myself I see the glam sound as very much being pleasant and on the excellent opening trio of "Bonafide Heroes", "Velvet Rope" and "My Remedy" the band sound remarkably like a cross between a boyband and the soon to return Backyard Babies. The standard as a whole doesn't remain as high for the rest of the record but Santa Cruz have attitude by the proverbial bucketload and will be around for a while longer yet on this evidence.
