An Autumn for Crippled Children: The Long Goodbye

If you go to this band's Facebook page, you won't see very much. There are a few pictures of album art, not to mention a very dark live shot of the band. I don't see any posts generated by the band or its promoters but there are a few comments by individuals—fans, maybe? I'm not sure. The band's promotional materials describe this ensemble as "mysterious." I guess I buy that. The names of the performers are, after all, MXM (vocals, guitar, keyboards), TXT (bass), and CXC (drums). I'd be interested to know what the middle initial "X" signifies for these guys.

So what's the band's music like? Well, it's black metal with plenty of post-metal stuff thrown into the mix. As familiar as those terms may be, they don't do enough to describe what's going on here. As I've listened to this album, I hear other things—ambient sounds and, oddly enough, the kinds of licks and changes that one might associate with late-80s alternative music. I'm serious. It's like early work by The Cure (think of the track "All Cats are Grey") mixed with black metal. I'm probably crazy, but this is an eclectic album, a depressing collection of songs, but an interesting one. I'd recommend tracks like "Gleam" or "Endless Skies" or "Only Skin." I don't know that this is the best experiment with Black Metal that I've heard, but it is nevertheless a fascinating one.
