Drakkar: Run With the Wolf

After the obligatory instrumental ("Rise of the Dark Lords")Milan based power metallers Drakkar jump straight in with a riff which in no way sounds anything like the opening of Iron Maiden's "The Wicker Man" quite frankly the scene is set for the rest of the album. A swift perusal below may well tell potential listeners all they need to know about the lyrical concerns and genre which Drakkar utilise. "Under the Banners of War", "Run with the Wolf", "Ride the Storm", "Ride the Storm" and "Ride the Storm" – what could possibly going on here?

The sharp-sighted amongst you will have spotted that we are very much in power metal territory here and Drakkar are more than proficient at what they do. I don't mean to damn them with faint praise but if metal of the power variety is your bag you'll enjoy Run With the Wolf very much. Drakkar have riffs aplenty, they can write huge choruses ("Under the Banners of War" and "Run with the Wolf" being particular winners,) and they aren't fully constrained by the confines of the power metal genre. The aforementioned "Run with the Wolf appears" to have the ghost of Jon Lord playing on it and this is definitely a good thing. Throughout its running time the album is full of fist pumping anthems which give not the slightest flying f**k about whether or not it's fashionable. More power to their collective elbow!
