Ara: Devourer of Worlds
I don't think this is the first time a metal album has brought to mind J. Robert Oppenheimer's famous use of the statement "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." Originally from the Bhagavad-Gita, that famous passage suddenly became a memorable way to remember the devastating effects of an atomic bomb. Obviously this album is called Devourer of Worlds instead of Destroyer of Worlds, but the similarity is still pretty interesting. See also the cover art to this album—a picture of the earth being shot through with a missile of some sort. The result is obviously devastating, a complete destruction of the earth. The picture oddly reminds me of images of bullets passing through apples. In any case, this is an album that is very serious about its core idea.
The music here is pretty much what you'd expect, especially after looking at those song titles—"Cadaverlanche," anyone? This is brutal stuff, the kind of music fans of Gorguts and Hate Eternal and Origin (and many others) will surely enjoy. Put another way, this is extreme music played with the perfect blend of technical proficiency and complete insanity. Check out "Jerupitus, the Blood-Drenched," "Cadaverlanche," and "Devourer of Worlds."
