Sitting Bull and the Bullshitters, The: Still Undead
Some classy 70's Hammond inspired retro-rock is served up on the debut album by the unusually named Finnish quintet The Sitting Bull and the Bullshitters. There are elements of dreamy, ethereal folk and plenty of nods in the direction of prog from a band that wears its influences firmly on its sleeve and they bring to mind the likes of Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, early UFO, Uriah Heep and from the other side of the Atlantic early Doobies, Iron Butterfly and the sounds that were coming out of San Francisco in the late 60's. And with the whole thing wrapped up in just under forty minutes this is definitely one for fans of old school vinyl albums that were all killer, no filler.
The name will likely count against them in terms of commercial appeal but musically they hit the spot with the macabre and haunting 'No Flowers on Gravestone' being just one of many stand out moments. High on melody, expression and emotion the hypnotic 'Rusty Leaf' is driven along by the throbbing bass and Hammond and the light touch production is another positive feature leaving the songs plenty of room to breathe. A great find and just one of many terrific bands that are finding new ways of looking backwards.
