Nocturnus: The Science of Horror

Early death metal pioneers Nocturnus will always be remembered for their fantastic 1990 debut The Key, but the band also created a stir in the underground with two demo cassettes that were released prior to their first album. Nuclear War Now! Productions have combined both the Nocturnus and The Science of Horror demos (from 1987 & 1988) into this brand new single LP release. While not as polished as they would sound on The Key, many of the songs that eventually made it to that debut are here in their infancy, much more raw and primal than many of us remember them. Keyboards had yet to make as huge of an impact, though they are here but used sparingly. Still, the raw power and savagery of tracks like "Standing in Blood", "Neolithic", and "Before Christ-After Death" is ever present, as that early Florida death metal sound, complete with powerhouse riffing, manic drum work, and growls mesh with the bands unique use of keyboard textures. The initial recording are quite raw and sound like they were recorded in a garage, but it's cool to listen to the band at this early stage on "B,C, - A.D.", "Nocturnus", and "The Entity". At times, it almost doesn't sound like the same band that would emerge just a few short years later with The Key, but The Science of Horror is a great look at an influential extreme metal band as they were just starting to hone their sound.
