Cyrax: Pictures

Cyrax's second album comes to us via the good folks at Bakerteam Record. The album was recorded at RecLab Studios with producer Larsen Premoli (Fire Trails, Dragon's Cave) behind the mixing desk and features various guest musicians including Antonio Pecere (Crimson Dawn), Viola Barinotti (Ghost Opera) and Lorenzo Beltrami (The Templar's Sword). The rather impressive cover artwork was made by French artist Pierre Alain (Necrodeath).

I would strongly suggest that the most obvious touchstone for this band and album is Therion with the blend of operatic nuances alongside fairly hardcore thrash metal and helium-powered vocals. The centrepiece of the album is the triptych suite "Shine Through Darkness" which begins with some nice soothing violin before changing times signatures and generally being quite …odd yet effective. It even sounds like there's a harpsichord in there as well as everything else. The heavy use of keyboards throughout give a sense of a slightly more succinct Dream Theater but Cyrax are no plagiarists and this is a very interesting listen.
