Six Pack of Doom: Angels Fall

Here we have the debut EP of the strangely named (though clever) Six Pack of Doom from California, titled Angels Fall. Don't be fooled by the name though, as these guys are not a doom act whatsoever, instead, the foursome mix classic metal sounds with some thrash as well as prog for a sound that falls somewhere in between Manilla Road, Mastodon, S.O.D., and early Megadeth. Just four songs included here, but it's an exciting ride no matter how brief, with plenty of inventive guitar riffs flying about the mix, vocals that sound like a marriage of Lemmy and Mark 'The Shark' Shelton, and acrobatic rhythms. "Planet Hurt" blisters with a non-stop barrage of explosive riffs and blazing solos, but I find the bands use of news clip voiceovers on "Killuminati' to be somewhat cliched (there's just way too many bands doing this nowadays), not to mention that this song doesn't quite hit the mark of the rest of the EP. "The Prophet" is much more successful (though those voiceovers return again), reminding of S.O.D. will a little Exodus thrown in for good measure, and the title track chugs along with some galloping rhythms and epic sounding guitar riffs, the vocals a blending of gruff & melodic styles. Overall, there's a lot to like here, but I think the band are still developing their sound and are obviously a bit raw. Certainly enough to recommend here and a band to keep your eye on.
