Slug Comparison: Slug Comparison

Ahh, the glorious beauty of the brooding and gloomy mind of Doug Harrison, the mastermind behind the dark alternative and wonderful Canadian band, Fen. Doug has stepped out front from Fen, to explore his songwriting exploits in a new solo project called Slug Comparison.

With Slug Comparison, Harrison ventures into territories of Techno-Industrial with the lead track, "Bringer of Doom", and building tension with the tune, "Evil Walks", with its eerie depictions and the always beautiful falsetto vocal passages that have become a Harrison trademark. Being able to stretch out even more than he does in Fen, Harrison steps up to another level of songwriting with this solo project, while also focusing on expending his vocal palette and his ever love of the blending the darkness and the light is as always quite evident. Harrison's voice continues to be both emotion filled and powerful, all the while being quite spatial. Slug Comparison is filled with beautiful soundscapes and textural tapestries that are abounding in this multi-layered trip into the outer reaches of ones soul.

Doug Harrison has once again delivered a tremendous piece of work that enlightening and dark and dank all at the same time. His use of acoustic sensibilities coupled with brooding electric themed alternative introspectiveness, is just simply really interesting. If you have never heard his regular band, Fen, you should also check them out. Much of the same will be found in Fen, as I have became a big fan of then, the moment that I heard them. If you like bands that delve in the melancholy like, Katatonia, Opeth and even Porcupine Tree or Steven Wilson, then this Slug Comparison project will find a place with you, for sure. The song, "Something To Bear", defines what I just described to a "T". Slow, emotive and reflective and to me that is winning combination from a musician that has yet to let me down.
