Wingfield, Mark: Proof of Light

Wow. I cannot believe this is the first I have heard British guitarist Mark Wingfield. His sixth studio album is titled Proof of Light and folks, it's a beauty. On the album he is joined by Yaron Stavi (upright bass) and Asaf Sirkis (drums).

The tones Wingfield is able to squeeze out of his instrument are truly remarkable. Lightning fast fusion to slow sustained highs, his playing is exceptional. The high notes often have a space-like feel, giving the music an ethereal quality with tremendous atmosphere. Putting a label on this is difficult but spacey progressive jazz fusion might suffice. It might not be the most eloquent description but describing Wingfield's out of this world style is no easy task.

On the insanely chaotic "Voltaic" Wingfield soars into avant-prog territory with angular guitar chords and dissonant guitar tones. The pace slows, speeds up and generally keeps the listener guessing as to where the music will go next. Certainly one of the most imaginative pieces here. In "A Conversation We Had" the trio ably demonstrates the art of restraint with its mellower feel and spacey guitar explorations. "A Thousand Faces" brings in a jazzier sound as the music builds in a subtle way until Wingfield unleashes another outstanding solo.

The album ends with the title track denoted with fabulous string bending from Wingfield as he puts together a rich palette of tones and styles. His glissando technique truly glistens in this free form avant-prog romp.

Wingfield is a remarkable player ably demonstrating his fabulous dexterity and keen sense of tone. Especially recommended for aficionados of guitar led avant-garde jazz and prog.
